New incident in army leaves more suspicions

A new incident in the Armenian army has claimed a human life.

Junior Sergeant Arthur Hakobyan, a contract serviceman at the military unit in Vaiq, Vayots Dzor province, has allegedly committed suicide.

Local Armenian daily Hraparak (Square) contacted the Defense Ministry to get more details about the incident.
Mushegh Aghekyan, an officer at the information department at the ministry, told the newspaper that the incident took place at 9:30 [Wednesday].

"According to preliminary information he caused himself a deadly bullet wound in the vicinities of the head at an estate store-room," Aghekyan told the daily.

He also said that Hakobyan worked at that military unit as a store man for about two years, and the incident took place in the store he was in charge of. Aghekyan did not provide the newspaper with other details such as why Hakobyan would commit a suicide, or how he managed to get a gun.

"No other details are known," Aghekyan told Hraparak.

But according to the daily Hakobyan killed himself with a gun that belongs to temporary serviceman. Hakobyan reportedly asked that soldier to help him move some boxes, and the latter agreed and left his gun leaning on the wall as he tried to help Hakobyan. But Hakobyan grabbed the gun and killed himself.

Further the newspaper mentions that Arthur Hakobyan was said to have serious problems in the family which could also drive him to suicide. But according to Hraparak there were also rumors that he did not commit suicide but rather was killed with four wounds in the vicinities of his chest.

Arthur Hakobyan is a citizen of Vaiq. He is married and has a child.

A criminal case has been launched. An investigation is underway.

Two other early incidents in the army this summer claimed 7 lives.
