Massive Layoffs at Javakhk Schools

Massive Layoffs at Javakhk Schools

AKHALKALAK, Javakhk (A-Info)-Public school officials in Javakhk carried our massive layoffs of teachers.
Akhalkalak teachers reported that in the city's #1 public school, formerly known as the Hovannes Tumanian School, 26 teachers were let go. In an earlier agreement with teachers at this school, administrators promised a wage decrease instead of layoffs.
Karine Tatevosian, a 24-year veteran chemistry and biology teacher at the #4 Public School, formerly known as the Derenik Demirdjian school, was abruptly fired. She was among 16 instructors who lost their jobs overnight.
School principal Natela Grigoryan attributed her decision to let Tatevoyan go on the fact that she is the chairwoman of the Armenian Relief Society of Georgia.
Tatevosyan found the principal's reasoning ridiculous, explaining that the ARS is a charitable organization and she does not collect wages for her volunteer work as the ARS Chairwoman. She also added that the instructor that was hired to replace her does not have the necessary credentials to teach the subjects.
Tatevosyan vowed to appeal the decision saying that her position as ARS chair did not warrant such drastic actions.
Another 18 teachers were let go at the Akhalkalak's #2 Public School.
Sources indicate that similar situation is also prevalent at other schools and impacts the worsening socio-economic condition of the Armenian population of Javakhk.
