The Executive Council of the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus is organising a lecture / presentation dedicated to St. Mary’s Armenian Church (Ganchvor) in Turkish-occupied Famagusta on Friday, 18th March 2016 at 7:00 pm at the “Utidjian” Hall of the Armenian Prelature on Armenia Street, Strovolos, under the auspices of H.E. Archbishop Nareg, Catholicossal Vicar of Cyprus.
The speaker will be Dr. Michael Walsh of the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
His lecture is entitled “Prayers Long Silent: Protecting St. Mary’s Armenian Church (Ganchvor) in Famagusta” and will be accompanied by a multimedia presentation with pictures and will last 45 minutes.
Dr. Michael Walsh, has a keen interest in the medieval history of Famagusta and has edited or co-edited several books on the subject including : Medieval and Renaissance Famagusta (Ashgate, 2012), Crusader to Venetian Famagusta (Central European University Press, 2014), Famagusta : Contemporary Images from an Historic City (Press, 2015), and City of Empires: Ottoman and British Famagusta (Cambridge Scholars Publishers, 2015).
The next in this series will be The Armenian Church of Famagusta and the Complexity of Cypriot Heritage (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). He has also nominated the Historic City of Famagusta to the World Monuments Fund Watch List of endangered sites in 2008 and again in 2010.
He is currently Associate Professor of Art History and Associate Chair (Research) in the School of Art, Design and Media, at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
